San Marzano tomatoes – the original

The San Marzano plant is a very old tomato variety from Campania. The tomato plants thrive on the nutrient-rich volcanic soil at the edge of Mount Vesuvius – that explains the intense flavour.

Unsuitable for industrial processing by nature, it was at risk of disappearing just a few years ago. Because of its delicate nature, the fruit can only be harvested and packed by hand.
